Combining traditional healing in our Ceremony Grounds, including a Sweat Lodge, Sacred Fire and Medicine Gardens with the latest advancements in treatment, Aboriginal Services now offers
First Nations, Inuit and Métis clients a pathway for healing, recovery and personal empowerment. We are seeking one (1) full-time permanent and one (1) full-time temporary Social Worker from the First Nations, Inuit or Métis peoples with a demonstrated connection to one of these communities and deep cultural knowledge of the traditions in ceremonies and healing. As a
member of a strong interdisciplinary team, the Aboriginal Social Workers will participate in the latest developments in culture based client centered care, advise on current research, and have
access to dynamic education and learning opportunities with benefits and vacation as part of a full time position.

Reporting to the Manager of Aboriginal Services, the successful candidates will work as part of an Aboriginal inter-professional team to provide comprehensive assessments, group and individual counselling, attend to Aboriginal clients in the hospital, provide referrals, support traditional healing ceremonies lead by the Traditional Healer, offer culturally based psycho-educational sessions and transition planning for clients seeking treatment for their concurrent addiction and mental health disorders. The Aboriginal Social Workers will have sound knowledge of first stage trauma treatment, trauma-informed care, addictions treatment, concurrent disorders treatment, First Nations, Inuit and Metis cultures in Ontario, Aboriginal history, the social determinants of health impacting Aboriginal peoples, traditional healing and ceremonies, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and Aboriginal service delivery networks for mental health and addictions and system navigation.

In this role, the First Nations, Inuit or Metis Social Workers will liaise with other services (both outpatient and inpatient) at CAMH and with First Nations, Inuit and Métis organizations and community agencies, as required, to coordinate and deliver care for clients in an efficient and safe manner. The Aboriginal Social Workers will provide supervision to MSW students. The Aboriginal Social Workers will contribute to program and CAMH processes, research activities, program development and evaluation, and continuous quality improvement activities. Medical data entry is a job requirement and training is provided.


  • First Nations, Inuit or Métis membership
  • Demonstrated strong connections to a First Nation, Inuit or Métis community
  • MSW degree
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in providing quality care to Aboriginal clients
  • Registered Member in good standing with Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Eligible for adjunct/status-only appointments with university faculties that have affiliation agreements with CAMH

Major Assets:

  • Ability to provide traditional teachings; understanding of traditional knowledge systems
  • Experience in traditional ceremonies as a Helper for the Sweat Lodge, Singer of Ceremonial Songs, Fire Keeping, Leadership, Drumming
  • Preparing traditional ceremonial items such as rattles/shakers, drums, medicine pouches
  • Training in and demonstrated knowledge of the First Nations Mental Health Continuum, historical trauma, intergenerational trauma, concurrent disorders, harm reduction, evidence based treatment modalities within an Aboriginal concurrent disorders treatment setting, Aboriginal trauma informed care, care for Aboriginal Two-Spirited LGBTQ2 clients
  • Ability to share traditional perspectives on mental health, substance use, recovery and healing; integrating traditional knowledge and wise practices for healing with mainstream approaches to treatment
  • Certification in CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Seeking Safety are assets
  • Demonstrated therapeutic rapport with clients, conflict resolution and group therapy skills These positions require excellent organizational skills, superb written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to meet administrative deadlines. Salary Range: $33.74 to $45.46 per hour.
