Hawks win morale booster over Sailors

HAGERSVILLE – The Hagersville Hawks went into Saturday night’s Jr. C game with a focused and well executed plan to shut down the Port Dover Sailors 6-0 at the Hagersville Arena. The Sailors have been breathing down Hagersville’s neck for a while but this win puts more distance between themselves and Dover, doing it in fine style.

Hagersville is in third place with a 23-15-1 record while Dover drops to 22-18-0 in fourth place. Looking up the standings, the Hawks will finish in third place as both Glanbrook Rangers and Grimsby Peach Kings are untouchable with in first place with 71 points, and Glanbrook has 54 points.

Matt Watson scored a hat trick accounting for half of Hagersville’s goals Friday night and opened the scoring at 5:55 of the first period with an unassisted, powerplay goal.

Three more Hagersville goals were added in the second by Jake Stevenson, Watson and Wesley Fritz. Two more late in the third period by Weston and Stevenson sealed the fate. Stephen Tierney stood perfect against 47 shots for a well-deserved shut-out win.

The Hawks fly into Glanbrook Wednesday Feb. 1 before closing out the regular season at home against Grimsby Saturday, Feb. 4 and in Simcoe Feb. 5. Then the playoffs begin.
