SN students participate in Halloween for Hunger

SIX NATIONS – Students at all Six Nations schools will be participating in “Halloween for Hunger” this year.

Halloween for Hunger is a program begun by Wendy Johnson of Six Nations and is intended to urge kids and residents of Six Nations to consider giving nonperishable/ canned foods for those families in need, instead of, or even along with, the traditional Halloween candy.

Johnson hopes that, this program will encourage each and every student to ‘Trick or Treat’ for much needed food for some members of the Six Nations community.

“Although it’s not a guarantee – I have heard that children may still receive candy along with a food donation from some households,” says Johnson.

Students from Emily C. General, I.L. Thomas, Jamieson, J.C. Hill Kawenni:io/Gaweni:yo, and Oliver M. Smith schools will be coming around for Halloween for Hunger with name tags provided by the Six Nations Police Services to identify those who are participating in the “Halloween for Hunger” program. Johnson hopes residents will stock up before Halloween.

The time limit for students to collect the food items will be 2 hours from 6:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. This allows a cut-off for households so that the food requests do not run continuously all night.

But there is a second part to this exercise, and that is to benefit the students as well.

“This is intended to be a young person initiative to empower children and prove that they can make a difference and be young leaders,” Johnson says.

There will be a prize donated to the school that collects the most food items – a cash prize and a special pumpkin that can be passed on to the next school if the campaign continues on an annual basis. There will also be a prize donated by Village Pizza and Leenie’s Flowers to the class that collects the most food items.
