UNIFOR president welcomes change in Ottawa

OTTAWA – Canada’s largest labour union, Unifor, welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s proposed repel of anti-labour bills C-525 and C-377. These two bills were put in place by the previous federal Conservatives under former PM, Stephen Harper.

The bills were called under scrutiny for “undermining the charter right to form a union for workers in federally regulated sectors while imposing unnecessary and onerous reporting burdens on all unions,” according to Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “The union movement worked diligently to repeal these undemocratic and unjust bills.”

At the same time, Unifor is also continuing to lobbying hard in favour of recognizing and honouring aboriginal rights across the country and was in conversation very recently with Prime Minister Trudeau when the talked about these and other important issues facing all Canadians.

In a meeting with NDP leader Thomas Mulcair, Dias stressed the need to hold the government to account, especially since it had made so many promises during the election about helping ordinary people.

“This has just the start of this conversation.” Said Political Action and Member Mobilization Director Roland Kiehne. “We are going to be very active.”
