Located just outside of Caledonia, the Plank Road One Stop hosted the Lyle Anderson Memorial Smoke Dance Competition this Sunday, July 26.
With several wampum belt flags erected on wooden poles marking the dancing circle, dancers arrived and began preparing for the competition. The competition got off to a late start as speaker Cam Hill postponed to wait for dancers still dancing for the Grand River Powwow.
Spectators and family members gathered around the circle as Haudenosaunee social dances intertwined with smoke dances and age groups from junior to golden age competed. Along with “Shake the Bush” and “Women’s Shuffle Dance,” dancers also competed in a “Switch Dance,” where men and women partner to trade regalia and compete in their partner’s outfits.
