Raven Swamp backs out two months before GON

Just two months before the Gathering of Nations, the largest Pow Wow in North America held in Santa Fe, NM, former title holder of Miss Indian World Raven Swamp of Kahnawake has stepped away from her duties to focus on her “health and well-being.”

She announced her smoke dance special to be hosted at the gathering on Saturday, January 3 via Facebook, only to step down from her title duties on Monday, January 19.

“This past year has been truly special. I traveled across Turtle Island to many indigenous communities and meeting many amazing people. Along the way, I represented my people and my nation to the best of my abilities. When I reflect on this year it fills my heart with joy and gratitude,” wrote Swamp to Facebook.

“I had never held any title before this one. The demands and responsibilities had become too great and began to affect me personally. Sadly, at this time I must step away from this journey as Miss Indian World to focus on my health and well-being.

Regretfully, I must apologize in advance for canceling my upcoming Haudenosaunee Smoke Dance Special at the next Gathering of Nations Powwow. The money that I had raised for the Dancers and Singers payout will now go to an as yet [to be] determined cause or charity.”

The committee has been quiet, but in this case, the First Runner Up may be called upon to take over the duties of Miss Indian World. This means that the runner-up will have only two months to prepare a special.
