The Indian Residential School system in Canada has officially been recognized as genocide by the House of Commons.
Winnipeg MP Leah Gazan brought forward a motion to have the Indian Residential School system officially recognized as genocide on Thursday October 27. The motion passed unanimously.
In a place where we have to battle for the rights of Indigenous peoples, MPs let the truth be heard and unanimously passed a motion recognizing what happened at residential schools as a genocide.

Gazan previously brought the motion forward last summer but it did not pass.
On her Twitter account Gazan said, “This is historic. To survivors and descendants, I honour you today and every day.”
The Indian Residential Schools was called a “cultural genocide” by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015. Today’s motion is the first time it has been identified as “genocide”.
