House of Commons officially recognizes Indian Residential Schools as genocide

The Indian Residential School system in Canada has officially been recognized as genocide by the House of Commons.

Winnipeg MP Leah Gazan brought forward a motion to have the Indian Residential School system officially recognized as genocide on Thursday October 27. The motion passed unanimously.

Gazan previously brought the motion forward last summer but it did not pass.

On her Twitter account Gazan said, “This is historic. To survivors and descendants, I honour you today and every day.”

The Indian Residential Schools was called a “cultural genocide” by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015. Today’s motion is the first time it has been identified as “genocide”.
