Social media was brimming with outrage after dramatic photos surfaced showing children from the Kashechewan First Nation suffering from acute skin lesions, reportedly caused by the community’s tap water.

Members of the remote fly-in Northern Ontario community now say they are no longer confident using their tap water to bathe or do laundry.

Controversy around the photos launched public demands that provincial officials intervene and provide the children’s families the means to access proper medical care.

Earlier this year Kashechewan was one of the communities included in the public health emergency announced by Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler.

Some of the children have been transported to Timmins for treatment. Provincial officials announced the remaining children with the lesions will be sent to hospital by Tuesday.

A medical team from the hospital in Moose Factory is expected to visit Kashechewan on Tuesday.
