More than 70 projects at District Science Fair

SIX NATIONS – Elementary students from Grades 6 to 7 came together at Emily C. General Elementary School on Tuesday, February 27, to share their innovative ideas and creation for the Annual District Science Fair.

E.C.G. Teacher Arlene Charles severed as the host teacher for the event and noted how “smoothly” the day went with the well behaved students.

“Oh it went well,” said Charles. “The kids were well behaved and we seen some really amazing projects this year, so hopefully it continues like this in the future.”

“We had approximately 75 projects from each of the schools, and we had more prizes than ever to give this year,” she said.

Charles explained that first place prizes were $100, second place prizes were $50 and third place prizes were $25, and they also gave consolation prizes for honorary mentions.

Of the students that received one of these prizes was Keegan Skye, 13, who took first place for the Grade 8 category as while representing I.L. Thomas Elementary.

“This is my second time at district that I’ve won first,” said Skye. “It feels really accomplishing and kinda like winning the lottery.”

Skye explained that his invention for the fair utilizes a motor and recycling bin to sort “junk.”

“It’s called the K.A.R.B.P.,” said Skye. “It stands for Keegan’s Automatic Recycling Bin Project. [The machine] crushes cans and other random junk and automatically sorts it.”

Many other notable projects like Skye’s filled the tables in the large gymnasium, and Teacher Jessi Skye from I.L. Thomas said that the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) is the next step for many.

“It’s almost a week- long event,” said Skye. “We had students participate last year that won awards, so they go to display their talent. They also compete with the surrounding schools and it’s really fun and interesting to see.”

Skye explained that participating in BASEF requires commitment on the parents part, but it is a good opportunity for the students to display their “innovative ideas, experiments and studies.”

“They get to meet other schools and professionals in the field, because that’s what is really key,” she said. “It’s only for [grade] seven and eight students and each school is responsible for registering their students.”

Skye said that this week is the deadline for BASEF registration, and for this fair the students will also have to do an interview with judges and present their projects.
