Corvairs split this week’s games – still in first

CALEDONIA ‑ Saturday night at the Haldimand County Caledonia Centre, the Pro-Fit Corvairs took down the Niagara Falls Canucks 5-2 in a well-played, team effort victory in which there were five different goal scorers.

Matt McCartney, Matt Rimac, Quentin Maksimocich, Jake Brown and Matthew Hore all added a notch to their stick to secure the win.

Caledonia leads the Golden Horseshoe Conference with a 14-1-1 record, with Ancaster six points behind in second, however they have two games in hand over Caledonia.

New to the Caledonia lineup this season is smooth skating and quick handed Corey Pawley who now tops the entire Jr. B scoring list with an impressive 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in 24 starts. He not only scores often, he scores timely goals as well with 5 game winners, 7 power play goals, 12 power play assists and a short hander.

Thursday night in Ancaster, the Pro-Fit Corvairs and the Avalanche could not outlast one another as the teams split the two points in a 5-5 tie after two overtime periods.

Todd Ratchford opened the scoring on a power play with Ancaster’s Matt Mannella serving time for a check-from-behind at the halfway point in the period.

But then, Owen Burnell and Ben Hughes gave the Avalanche a 2-1 lead by the end of the frame. The Corvairs’ Blake Luscombe notched the first two goals of the third period to earn a 3-2 lead late in the game.

Ancaster pulled their goalie late in the game but it was the Corvairs who benefited with an empty net goal scored by Mitchell Fitzmorris to take a two-goal advantage with a minute left. Ryan Cox brought the Avs back to a one goal deficit at 19:04, and they pulled the goalie again. This time it worked as Hughes sent the game to OT at 19:37.

The first extra session came and went without a game winner forcing a second OT period, which also ended without a decision. Under league rules there was no shoot out and the game was declared a 5-5 tie game.

The Pro-Fit Corvairs will take on the Thorold Black Hawks in Thorold on Thursday Oct. 29th, and then will try and scare up another win on Halloween night, Oct. 31st, against the Pelham Panthers in Caledonia at 7:30.
