OHSWEKEN – The Six Nations Peewees Hockey Team showed Langton that having a fuller bench really does pay off in stamina and endurance on Sunday, February 7.
Just as usual, the beginning of the first period kept the score board even, with both sides fighting for possession and seeming to warm up to their team mates in the process. Keeping defence tight, the Peewees offence got a lot of shot opportunities, but just couldn’t connect with the net. The focus on offence allowed Langton to score the first goal of the game, but this didn’t sit well with the Peewees by the second.
A lot of short and quick passes in front of the net, allowed for a nice returned goal by Blair Green, assisted by Donovan Monteforty and Cole Powless. Three minutes later, Green scored yet again, assisted by Thunder Hill and Powless. This gave the peewees a nice lead, but they still weren’t satisfied.
By the start of the third period, the Peewees won the face off and Ruckus Green snatched the puck for his first goal and Hill scored right after. Further into the period, the peewees did a lot of intercepting on Langton offence, but over did it on defence with a lot of aggression caused two penalties for the Peewees. This gave Langton a better chance at scoring again, however, the team kept a tight defence. Defenders even blocked shots with their bodies and sticks and disabled Langton’s attempts at moving the scoreboard.
Soon, Zack Johnson – who got a lot of shot opportunities – finally sunk a goal, assisted by Mitch VanEvery. This allowed the Peewees to ride their four point lead, but Langton returned one nearing the end of the period.
Showing a lot of aggression for the returned goal, Powless slashed Langton’s Logan Waugh, who slashed back. Both received a two minute penalty, and allowed Langton to score one more before the end of the game. Unshaken by the returned goals, the Peewees seemed to bounce off of the ice with their win 5-3.
