WINNIPEG – After seven months of research, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police released their study on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada today. Over the past seven months, the RCMP collected data and in their final report, stated they had the names of 1,181 Indigenous women and girls who were either murdered or who had disappeared in the time period from 1980-2012.

NEWFOUNDLAND – Newfoundland and Labrador joined the Nova Scotia Provincial government in demanding Prime Minister Steven Harper call a national inquiry into murdered and missing Aboriginal women, Friday.
The mayors of Nunavut’s Qikiqtani (Baffin) region passed a motion opposing offshore oil and gas exploration at the 2014 Baffin Mayors’ Forum held in early March in Iqaluit. The motion was passed unanimously, with all thirteen mayors of the region voting in favour.
Sadly, yet another indigenous women has been found dead. The body of Loretta Saunders, who is Inuk from Labrador and was almost three months pregnant, was found Wednesday afternoon along the Trans-Canada Highway in New Brunswick. The disappearance of Saunders, 26, has now shifted into a homicide investigation.
TYENDINAGA – Tyendinaga Mohawk activist Shawn Brant has given Prime Minister Steven Harper until the end of February to call a national inquiry into missing Indigenous women.
In 2013, three young First Nations women met sudden and tragic deaths in Toronto within a three-month period. Even more startling is the fact that the police quickly dismissed all deaths as either suicides or ruled out foul play without doing a thorough investigation.
The Ontario Provincial Police, Cayuga Detachment has issued a statement saying that they will not be pursuing charges against Six Nations people who were responsible in the shutting down of a section of Highway 6 last October.
