HALDIMAND —Haldimand County OPP charged a 27-year-old individual with multiple offences including impaired driving following a collision investigation on Haldimand Highway 56 in Canfield.

On Monday, January 25, 2021, at 9:42 p.m., OPP responded to Haldimand Highway 56 at Concession 2 Road for a single motor vehicle collision. A witness reported a vehicle went off the roadway and collided into the ditch.

While en route, OPP received a call for a suspicious person on Concession 2 Road. A witness reported an unknown person entered their vehicle and was allegedly attempting to steal the vehicle.

OPP located the individual inside the vehicle at the Concession 2 Road address where they investigated.

While speaking with the individual, signs of impairment were detected and the individual was arrested.

Tests administered by a Drug Recognition Evaluator determined the individual was impaired by drug.

Further investigation determined the individual was the driver involved in the initial vehicle collision call and the vehicle in the collision was reported stolen from the Hamilton area.

Investigation also revealed the individual was previously at a nearby fuel station earlier and failed to pay for a fuel purchase.

OPP has charged 27-year-old Ryan CANNON of Hamilton, ON with:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drug
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Theft over $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Operate motor vehicle while prohibited (two counts)
  • Fail to stop after an accident

The accused is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cayuga at a later date to answer to the charges.
