Imitation Pipe Bomb Creates a Disturbance in the Village

On Thursday, October 9, 2014 at approximately 1:20 p.m. Six Nations Police were called to investigate a suspicious package with contents that resembled a pipe bomb outside of Village Café on Fourth Line Road, Ohsweken.

The restaurant, the nearby plaza and local residents were immediately evacuated and the scene was secured while the Explosive Disposal Unit of the OPP were called to assist. The Six Nations Police extended the roadblock, securing the scene on Fourth Line Road from Chiefswood Road to Tuscarora Road.

At 4:56 p.m. the OPP Explosive Disposal Unit was seen to drive past the barricades towards Village Café. Within minutes, a small robotic unit operated remotely moved towards the suspected bomb. Both Six Nations Police and OPP officers were seen moving briskly about.

By 5:20 p.m. a larger robotic instrument was taken out of the O.P.P. van. This unit moved towards the Village Café approximately 30 minutes thereafter. The O.P.P. van moved closer to the scene. Bystanders could hear what seemed to be instructions from the police, and then popping sounds were heard.

The O.P.P. officers moved in closer and seemed to make observations from the side of the road. 3 O.P.P. officers entered the Village Café parking lot carrying a large box. At 6:44 p.m. one loud bang was heard.

By 6:50 p.m. the robotic instrument returned to the O.P.P. van and officers began packing up the Explosive Disposal Unit equipment. It was determined that the package had been made to resemble a pipe bomb, but it did not contain explosive materials.

Inspector Darren Montour indicated that the sounds came from knocking the cap off of the replica pipe bomb. Six Nations Police will continue to investigate, as it is not known who left the suspicious package or why.
