Over 2000 students attend tenth annual Pen pals gathering

SIX NATIONS — About 2000 elementary students from Six Nations and Caledonia gathered at Chiefswood Park on Friday to celebrate the Annual Pen Pals Gathering. Children from the two communities are paired as pen pals, writing back and forth throughout the school year. The event started as an initiative to encourage and foster positive relationships

SIX NATIONS — About 2000 elementary students from Six Nations and Caledonia gathered at Chiefswood Park on Friday to celebrate the Annual Pen Pals Gathering.
Children from the two communities are paired as pen pals, writing back and forth throughout the school year.

The event started as an initiative to encourage and foster positive relationships between youth of the two communities after the land reclamation in 2006.

This is the tenth year of the Pen Pals project.

Nahnda Garlow is Onondaga under the wing of the Beaver Clan of Six Nations. Nahnda has been a journalist with the Two Row Times since it's founding in 2013. She is a self-proclaimed "rez girl" who brings to the Two Row Times years of experience as a Haudenosaunee cultural interpreter, traditional dancer and beadwork aficionado. Nahnda is a member of the Canadian Association of Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association.
