Teachers at Six Nations set to strike Wednesday

OHSWEKEN — Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council confirmed late Tuesday that teachers in the community’s federal schools will go on strike along with the Public Service Alliance of Canada’s national strike, starting Wednesday morning.

In an email, Anne Noyes, Principal at I.L. Thomas Elementary confirmed that an agreement was not reached with the PSAC union and that a general strike has been declared for 12:01 April 19, 2023. “Schools will be closed to students and buses will be cancelled,” said Noyes.

The strike affects more than 1100 Six Nations students and their families, according to a statement from SNGR.

The strike will also affect Ohsweken Public Health employees on Six Nations.

“The PSAC strike has impacted our Six Nations of the Grand River community and has the SNGR Elected Council concerned for all of our members, students and families,” said Chief Mark B. Hill. “We are maintaining regular contact with federal officials in hopes of alleviating as much stress as possible through this difficult time. We will continue to assert political pressure to get all those affected in our community back to their regular routines as quickly as possible”.
