WELLAND – It took an overtime goal by Cody Brown to do it, but on Sunday night the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs pulled one out of the fire to keep their perfect season intact.
The Corvairs are still riding on top of the 28 team GOJHL with 22 wins for 44 points, stand four points ahead of the second place St. Catharines Falcons in the Golden Horseshoe Conference, and hold one game in hand.
The 11-8-3 Falcons pushed the Corvairs to the wall despite being outshot 54-38 and out played for most of the wide open game.
Jack Fitzgerald closed an otherwise scoreless first period at 19:18 to take a 1-0 lead into the second. Ryan Blunt scored on a powerplay to even the score at 3:18, assisted by Cody Brown and Kyler Nixon.
Connor Murphy gave Caledonia a one goal edge at 13:19 with assists going to Cosimo Fontana and Ryan Moran. But Welland fought back and tied it at 2-2 with a little more than a minute remaining in the period.
Caledonia took the lead again at 10:03 when Todd Ratchford connected from Cody Brown and Moran, but that lead would only last for six seconds. Right off the ensuing faceoff, Adam Mataya evened the score, yet again, at 10:09.
Nothing was decided in regulation time and at 3:55 of the extra frame, Cody Brown secured the 4-3 Caledonia win.
Colin Furlong registered the win in the Corvairs net while Chris Janzen suffered the loss for Welland, despite putting on a goaltenders clinic.
It was a much easier time the Friday night in Caledonia when the Niagara Falls Canucks took it on the chin 6-1. Furlong was in the zone all night, frustrating the Canucks until his shut-out was shattered by Austin Write at 18:45 of the third period.
After Fontana and Jordan Peacock put up a 2-0 first period score, Fontana struck quickly in the second period with his second of the night at 42 seconds, assisted by Nixon and Cody Brown. He then completed the hat-trick at 46 seconds of the third period from Murphy and Brown.
Connor Patton added a powerplay goal at 1:13 from Nixon and Matt Quilty who contributed a shorthanded goal at 14:55 from Spencer Gourlay and Justin Abraham.
With just over a minute left in the game, Fulong’s goose-egg was broken in the 6-1 win.
Connor Murphy leads the league in scoring with 14 goals and 35 assists for 49 points in 22 games. With a six-point weekend, Cody Brown moved into 9th place with 33 points in only 14 games played in a Caledonia uniform.
This week, the Pro-Fit Corvairs travel to Thorold for a date with the third place Blackhawks on Thursday night before bringing it on home to host the Port Colborne Pirates Saturday night at 7:30.
