Blast split series with Stoney Creek

BRANTFORD – Powered by Joel Prpic with three goals and two assists, and Derek Medieros’ two goals and three assists, the Brantford Blast outlasted the Stoney Creek Generals, 9-6, at the Brantford Civic Centre in Allan Cup Sr. AAA Hockey Friday night.

It was the first leg of a home-and-home series between the second place Generals and the fourth place Blast, but the Generals were in charge at home Sunday afternoon to take a 7-4 win.

In Stoney Creek, the Generals and the Blast exchanged three goals in the first period with Derek Medeiros scoring twice and Joel Prpic once for Brantford.

Stoney Creek’s Matthew Reynolds scored the lone goal of the second period and took a three goal lead in the first minute of the third period as Matt Reynolds and Kyle Zettler surprised Brantford at 24 seconds and again at 58 seconds.

Ryan McCarthy chipped in Brantford’s last goal of the game at 11:34 before Nathan Pageau topped off the General’s scoring at 14:45.

It was a good thing the Blast offense was on its game, because the defense and goaltending were suspect throughout the game.

Very early in, the Generals were assessed a goalie interference penalty when Marcus Ruberto ran into Anthony Marshall only 35 seconds into the game. That opened the door for Prpic’s first of the night, scored on a powerplay at 43 seconds.

The Blast led 2-1 after one period and 5-4 after two, but Stoney Creek clawed back with the first two goals of the third period, to take a 6-5 lead.

The Blast rallied and notched the last four goals to take the 9-6 win.

The Blast will host the Dundas Real McCoys Friday, Jan. 16th and have a go with the Norwood Vipers Sunday in Norwood.
