Six Nations Midgets battle back to win Championship

OHSWEKEN — The Six Nations Midget “A” Blackhawks are the 2018 winners of the Southern Counties, Local League Midget title after a close and well played best of three series against Waterford, which Six Nations took in two straight games for the Championship.

“This team has worked hard all year,” said coach Wayne General after the win. “We lost the first five or six games of the season, and we came back. These guys (Waterford) beat us in the first game of the season and the first game after the Christmas Break. They may have been a little bit over-confident.”

The long hard season took its toll in injuries as well.

“Two or three of our guys are playing injured and one is still out with a cast on his leg,” says General.

It didn’t take long for the Waterford Midgets to put  Six Nations Midget Intertown Blackhawks on their heals Saturday at the GPAs. It was a must-win for Waterford and they knew it as Zak Wilks struck at the 12.7-second mark to take a 1-0 lead, which is where the score stayed until 37 seconds into the second period when Austin Gardner opened the period from Sandy Porter and Thomas Mt.Pleasant.

Garner blew a Howitzer at the Waterford net, which Evan Tichelaar got most of, but the puck squeezed through and dribbled into the net behind him for. At the other end, Richard Montour was frustrating Waterford shooters.

Both goalkeepers were up to the challenge making several big saves that kept the game as close as it could have been, but with 13:01 remaining, Gardner scored his second of the game and the game-winner from Porter and Jake Smith.

The 2-1 Final score was enough to win the Championship Medal and Award for the Southern Counties Local League Midget “A” Championship.
