Rivercats win at the Western Northumberland Winter Classic Tournament

image_1The Haldimand Rivercats PeeWee Girls hockey team won their divisional Championship at the Western Northumberland Winter Classic Tournament this past Sunday, Jan.19th.

The road to the Championship began Friday night with a 3-0 Rivercats’ win over Lyndsay.

Saturday morning, they suffered their only loss, a 1-0 decision won by Napanee. The way the tournament was set up, the Rivercats then had to face the host West Northumberland Team and beat them by at least two goals.

The girls came up with a huge effort by winning 4-1, which sent them into the finals against Napanee. The teams fought to a 0-0 tie after two periods and most of the third, until Rivercats’ centre, Tsennie Kakani Bree Thomas, daughter of Connie Johnson and Cleveland Thomas, scored what would be the game winner with a little more than 3 minutes remaining in regulation time with a quick wrister from in front of the net.
