Awenda provincial park reclamation continues

TINY TOWNSHIP: A reclamation of Awenda Provincial Park is now entering its 19th month. Organizers have formed a grassroots connection with neighboring Springwater Provincial Park which has also been occupied by members of Beausoleil First Nation.

“We began as a result of the illegal surrenders of our Inherent Rights and Traditional Territories along with the policies and laws enforced upon our people where the Chippewa Tri Council and Canada are in breach of the 1764 Niagara Covenant Chain Belt” explains Kai Kai Kons, a spokesperson for the camp.

Two Row Wampum unites NYS opposition to fracking

As early as 2007, the Onondaga Nation began understanding the repercussions of hydrofracking, a method of extracting methane gas from deep shale formations and warned allies about the risks of the industry.

In 2009, the Haudenosaunee issued a statement which called on New York State to ban the permitting of high volume hydraulic fracturing and encouraged allies to live up to our agreements to protect shared resources.

U.S. Supreme Court Says “No” to Onondaga Land Rights

On October 15, 2013, the United States Supreme Court declined to hear the Onondaga Land Rights appeal.

This shameful decision closes the door on the prospects of justice for the Onondaga within the U.S. judicial system. It is not, however, the end of efforts by the Onondaga and their allies to seek justice for the Onondaga, the Haudenosaunee and all indigenous peoples.

Federal criminal case highlights Akwesasne money laundering and informant network

SYRACUSE – The federal criminal case against William D. Humphries has now begun in Syracuse, New York.

The South Carolina tobacco farmer is accused of money-laundering on the Akwesasne Territory at the tribal class 2 Mohawk Bingo Palace, from 2006 to 2009. He has also been accused of conspiring to manufacture tobacco products without a license, as well as conspiring to commit wire fraud to avoid Canadian taxes. Humphries could face 30 years in federal prison if convicted of the charges.

The sticks were donated by Arrow Express Sports (AES) as a part of ‘Walk With Me’; a new initiative looking to connect dis-engaged First Nations youth with their sporting culture.
