AKWESASNE – Tensions on Cornwall Island (Kawehnoke) remain high after a hearing in the city of Cornwall resulted in a judge ruling on the fate of several empty buildings on the Kanienkehaka island.
AKWESASNE – Recent comments by Quebec provincial leaders regarding the possibility of Quebec leaving Canada have led to a First Nation backlash. Some Mohawk band councils wasted no time in putting their two cents in following the referendum speculation. The Quebec provincial election takes place on Monday, April 7, 2014.

AKWESASNE – Yet another one of the vaunted 1000 Islands on the St. Lawrence River has been offered for sale. According to published reports, Sheep Island is now available on the Canadian real estate market. The United States government has claimed some of the islands “on behalf of the Mohawk people”. Akwesasne residents assert that ownership of the islands has never been ceded.
AKWESASNE – A low-flying Canadian military aircraft was spotted on Feb. 28, 2014 by Akwesasne community members living on Cornwall Island (Kawehnoke).

December 2012 – A federal search warrant raid on Dec. 18 on the closed Three Feathers Class II Casino resulted in the arrest of the Wolf Clan Representative from the Akwesasne Men’s Council. The raid and arrests of two other Akwesasne men left many questions for Kanienkehaka Kaianerehkowa Kanonhsesne clan members.
BUFFALO – On Sunday, Nov. 17, the “Let’s Talk Native… with John Kane” live radio show had some very special guests. In addition to the regular show participants, host John Kane and ESPN – AM1520 in Buffalo, welcomed a network television producer from the Al-Jazeera Arabic Channel.
AKWESASNE – Akwesasne War Chief, Skaghenhate’, drove up to his Urban Thrift retail tobacco business on Nov 17, and saw something different. A vinyl sign he had put up had been defaced with black spray paint sometime during the night.
The Cayuga Nation of New York has been in the news for economic development for the past few years. In 2012 the tribal government launched a Cayuga brand tribally manufactured cigarette. In 2013, the Cayuga Nation re-opened a Class II electronic bingo parlor in Union Springs, New York.
The tribal government business plan has now received the support of a prominent group of elected councils. The United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) formed in 1968, is based in Nashville, Tennessee.
SYRACUSE – The federal criminal case against William D. Humphries has now begun in Syracuse, New York.
The South Carolina tobacco farmer is accused of money-laundering on the Akwesasne Territory at the tribal class 2 Mohawk Bingo Palace, from 2006 to 2009. He has also been accused of conspiring to manufacture tobacco products without a license, as well as conspiring to commit wire fraud to avoid Canadian taxes. Humphries could face 30 years in federal prison if convicted of the charges.
