Six Nations celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day in Ohsweken

OHSWEKEN — The weather was spectacular, as over two thousand people gathered in Ohsweken to celebrate the National Indigenous People’s Day.

The festival is an annual event sponsored by the Six Nations Elected Council with a free barbecue and free midway sponsored by Grand River Enterprises. One of the community’s radio stations, CKRZ FM also hosted a free concert featuring local performers.

SNEC took the care this year, to honour members of the community who have become sports legends playing hockey with the NHL. Featuring our special Ceremony honouring our past and present @NHL / WHA Players.

Henry Elmer “Buddy” Maracle and James Jamieson of the New York Rangers; Guy Smith of the New England Whalers; Stan Jonathan of the Boston Bruins and Brandon Montour of the Buffalo Sabres were all acknowledged for their accomplishments in the world of sports. Six Nations cornhusk doll artist Elizabeth Doxtater created dolls for each of the recipients that will eventually be on display at the Dajoh Youth & Elders Centre.
