Strange behaviour after fiery crash

BRANTFORD – Erie Ave in Brantford was shut down for several blocks Sunday afternoon after a bizarre fiery car crash that sent one woman to hospital with serious facial injuries and another man to jail.

The couple’s Trail Blazer was reported to police earlier for driving erratically. Police went to investigate the complaint and came upon the SUV in flames and a black Chevy pick up truck crashed into a hydro pole. The pickup was parked on the side of the road when the SUV rear ended it and exploded into flames.

A female occupant of the SUV, got out of the vehicle with serious facial lacerations and began running down Erie Ave., covered in blood. The male driver followed her as they both ran away from the scene of the crash shouting at each other.

The woman tried to enter a house on Erie Ave., but the elderly female occupant managed to push her out because she was acting strange and calling someone’s name as if he lived there.

The male party went next door and tried to get into that house, but no one was home. Police gave pursuit on foot and apprehended the pair at the corner of Salisbury Ave and Erie. Both the injured woman and a police officer, who suffered a hand injury in the apprehension, were taken to hospital.

It is not known at this time what caused the crash or if the occupants were impaired in some fashion.

After a police investigation of the scene, which covered more than three city blocks, the road was reopened to traffic.
