Toronto Raptors Unveil Indigenous-Inspired Logo and Host Heritage Game on January 6

The Toronto Raptors have revealed a striking new Indigenous-inspired logo to celebrate the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of Indigenous peoples. This design, created in collaboration with Luke Swinson, a visual artist from the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, encapsulates rich cultural symbolism and artistry.

“This opportunity means so much to me,” said Swinson, who hails from Kitchener, Ontario. “Representing what’s important to me and my community through such an iconic and recognizable logo is incredible. Growing up, seeing this kind of representation would have filled me with pride and inspiration. I hope to share that feeling with Indigenous youth today.”

The Story Behind the Logo

Swinson’s design focuses on Indigenous joy, with two figures playing basketball under a flowing river, hills, and a setting sun. Key elements of the logo include:

  • The River and Sun: Representing the life-giving forces of water and the Grandfather Sun.
  • The Eagle: Symbolizing the connection to the Creator and the spiritual world.
  • The Feather: A sign of honor, wisdom, strength, and spiritual closeness.
  • The Four Sacred Medicines: Tobacco, sage, cedar, and sweetgrass, integral to Indigenous ceremonies and traditions.

Indigenous Heritage Game

The Raptors will showcase this new logo during their annual Indigenous Heritage Game on Monday, January 6, when they face the Milwaukee Bucks at Scotiabank Arena. The event will honor the contributions and experiences of Indigenous communities to the sport and the city.

Special Experiences Planned for Fans:

  • Digital Platforms: Game day graphics and content will spotlight Swinson’s art and the Lloyd S. King Elementary School basketball program.
  • Community Engagement: Indigenous groups, including Lloyd S. King Elementary School’s basketball team and ENAGB (an Indigenous youth agency), will attend the game.

    • Proceeds from MLSE Foundation’s 50/50 lottery will support youth initiatives, including ENAGB.
