Every June 21, Canadians honour Indigenous peoples as survivors. That is true but incomplete. Indigenous nations helped create Canada. The Haudenosaunee Great Law of Peace influenced both Canadian and American constitutional development. The Haldimand Proclamation of 1784 memorialized a Crown obligation. Both successor states built on contributions they later sought to dismantle.
