Genesee wins NJCAA Championship in OT

SYRACUSE, NY – NJCAA National Championship game was played Sunday, May 15th at the David Murphy Stadium in Syracuse, New York between the Onondaga College Lazers and the Genesee Community College Cougars with Genesee winning 13-12 in overtime.

Both teams boast a number of Haudenosaunee players including some from Six Nations.

In the championship game, Onondaga jumped into a 5-2 first quarter lead with Kahnawake’s Cam Horn opening the scoring for OCC. Genesee answered with Pat VanBortle scoring from Six Nations’ Alex Henry, and taking the lead with Six Nations’ Jacob Bomberry’s first goal of a six point game.

It was 5-2 after the first quarter for the Lazers, and 8-5 at the half. Genesee trimmed the deficit down to 10-8 by the end of the third quarter. The Cougars clawed all the way back by the end of regulation time, when Van Bortle scored the tying goal from Bomberry with 3:43 remaining, eventually sending the game to OT.

Van Bortle completed the mission for Genesee, unassisted 1:14 into the extra frame with his fourth goal to win the 2016 NJCAA National Championship.

Haudenosaunee players contributing to a great and exciting final include, for the Genesee Community College Cougars include: Jacob Bomberry, Six Nations (3G,3A), Sherman Williams, Irving N.Y. (4G), Davis Price (1G), John Mohawk, Irving N.Y. (1G,1A), and Alex Henry, Six Nations (1A).

For OCC, it was Cam Horn, Kahnawake (3G), Larson Sundown, Tonawanda (4A), Matthew Bennett, Onondaga (1G,1A), and Teiowison’tion (Brine) Rice, Kahnawake (2A). Backup goalie for the game was Six Nations’ Doug Jamieson.
