The sun was shining and a refreshing breeze added to the pleasant vibes radiating at Hamilton’s Indigenous People’s Day ceremonies last Friday. Dancing, singing, drums, vendors, food and drink, plus open hearts and open minds, were on the agenda at the West Harbour on James Street.
Six Nations ombudsman Joseph Martin taught the crowd a brief history of the local Indigenous populations and shared culture through song and dance. Martin, from both Six Nations and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, introduced first-timers to classic Haudenosaunee smoke dance and intertribal songs.
Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath joined the festivities, speaking of treaty neighbours’ responsibility to build relationships grounded in understanding, respect and reciprocity.
There were dozens of booths showcasing Indigenous artisans, strawberry juice and Indian Tacos. A weekend-long powwow was also held at Battlefield Park in Stoney Creek for the annual Soaring Spirits Festival. Haldimand County raised the Two Row Wampum flag to recognize the day.
