Two women have been sentenced to life in prison for the death of an Indigenous boy they were planning to adopt. Brandy Cooney, 45, and Becky Hamber, 47, received life sentences with no chance of parole for 25 years for the December 2022 death of a 12-year-old boy who weighed only 48 pounds.
Court heard the prospective adoptive parents starved and neglected the boys. Ontario Superior Court Justice Clayton Conlan found them guilty of first-degree murder, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and failing to provide the necessaries of life.
