Canada Day rife with tragedy and emergencies

Canada Day 2026 will be one many won’t soon forget, with a powerful freak storm, power out for hundreds across the reserve and Southern Ontario, and two tragedies in nearby Binbrook during one of the hottest heat waves in recent memory.

Nathaniel Selambi, 7, drowned in Lake Niapenco at Binbrook Conservation Area. A kayaker also capsized and suffered a medical incident. The storm left 140,000 customers without hydro. Some Six Nations residents were without power for 24 hours as temperatures soared into the 40s with humidex.
