I was recently given the opportunity to join the Dreamcatcher Foundation to report on the opening of four children’s playgrounds that the foundation has donated to northern Ontario native communities. The foundation was established by the Six Nations based business Grand River Enterprises in 2004 for the purposes of providing support and addressing situations unique to First Nations communities.
SIX NATIONS – The sun was out and so were friends, family and business associates of GRE owners Ken Hill and Jerry Montour for the 20th Montour-Hill Tournament of Friends hoisted at Sundrim Golf Course at 4925 Highway #6.
This week Six Nations own Ron Jamieson was named as a Member to the Order of Canada along with 85 other Order of Canada appointments.
In a press release from the Governor General of Canada, Jamieson was noted “for his pioneering contributions to the finance industry, notably in improving access to financial services for First Nations people across Canada.”
My “Canadian Friends” were taught to value their Canadian culture and to de-value the things “Six Nay Me” values! On the flip side I was taught to value my “Six Nay Me” culture and to despise my “Canadian Friends” values. “Multi-Cultural” school my foot! No one ever instructed us on how to practically empathize with one another’s stories or to respect each other’s sufferings. We were never taught how to effectively engage with “the other culture” using tact and real understanding. Sadly, while learning to survive in our society, we became the pillars of our cultures that fortify the chasm between us and keep it gaping wide open.

SIX NATIONS — Six Nations folk quilter Irma Martin was at the Solidarity Day celebration at Chiefswood Park Saturday selling tickets for a raffle for a hand made quilt she designed five years ago and only recently completed. The quilt depicts several Pow Wow dancers in full regalia.
The writing on the wall couldn’t have been written in bigger, bolder, and clearer letters over the past year: The relentless exploitation of fossil fuel is pushing the planet beyond a series of irreversible environmental tipping points. Melting glaciers. Acidifying oceans. An atmosphere reaching carbon levels not seen in millions of years. We are in the midst of what scientists call a “mass extinction” event that is directly attributable to the un-ending growth industrial capitalism.
SIX NATIONS – A study conducted on the Six Nations territory has only reiterated what Haudenosaunee people have been saying since time immemorial: life is sacred, everything is connected and what affects one thing, affects us all. The new study has linked obesity with unhealthy diets, and environmental pollution with contaminants found in plants, animals and humans.
Last week Six Nations Elected Council made a choice – after being presented with an official complaint – to send a letter ordering a young non-status man off the territory. There are many facets to this dispute; including details about what happened between the evicted and the family who lodged the complaint. My condolences to both parties. Your pain is evident and I’m very sorry you have had to walk through this.
Like many Generation X’ers from Six Nations I grew up watching cartoons on Saturday mornings and learned the phrase “Yabba-dabba-doo!” from the Flintstones. It’s funny how these programs can really condition our minds because for the next thirty years, like Fred Flintstone, I used the term “maroon” interchangeably with “moron” and I thought it was a funny play on words.
SIX NATIONS – The Major Series Six Nations Chiefs got back on track this past weekend with a pair of wins after loosing 15-9 to the Lakers in Peterborough Thursday night. Wins against Waterloo and Oakville bounced the Chiefs back into second place, two points behind Peterborough and two points ahead of Brooklin.
Last week the United States Patent and Trademark office decided that the Washington “Redskins” logo and name were disparaging to Native Americans in the United States and cancelled patent protection for the logo and name.
