Thotharatye Joe Brant and Tewateronhiakhwa Mina Beauvais, both Mohawks living in Tyendinaga, were awarded the Language Passion Award and Lifetime Achievement, respectively, at the 2013 “Raising Our Voices: Biannual Language Conference” Awards Banquet. The 2013 Biannual Language Conference was held October 25th and 26th.
BRANTFORD – The Brantford Blast of the Allan Cup Sr Hockey League got the new season off on the right foot with a 7-1 pulverizing of the Welland Whalers at the Brantford Civic Centre Friday night.

CALEDONIA – The Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs only had one game this week, but it was a big one. The 19-0 Corvairs put it on the line Saturday night at the Haldimand Centre Arena against the 16-2-0, second place St. Catharines Falcons.
It was the consistent, all-line balanced roaster from the goal line on out that has been the benchmark of the Pro-Fit Corvairs over the past couple of years and this year’s 19-0 record is proof that whatever the formula is, it’s working.
OHSWEKEN – The Six Nations House League Novice’s tangled with Ingersol #1 at the Gaylord Powless Arena Saturday afternoon and came out on the wrong side of a 5-2 final score.
The first period need with Six Nations leading 1-0 on the lone goal of the period scored by Davin MacDonald, assisted by Liam Maracle and Liam Porter.
OHSWEKEN – The Six Nation PeeWee’s came close, but didn’t get the win Saturday at the GPA against the Delhi Rockets. Instead, they had to settle for a hard fought, 4-3 loss.
There was no scoring in the first period, but Six Nations gave up a two-on-none breakaway early in the second period which Devin Boughner eventually scored on.
BRANTFORD – The Canadian Military Heritage Museum in Brantford has a great display section dedicated to the Onkwehon:we allied warriors from the American Revolution to today’s warriors in uniform around the world.
Rick Shaver, chair of the museum, says his display has been heavily viewed by non-Native visitors and school children.
BRANTFORD – There was another clash of ideals on Erie Ave Monday when members of the Mens Fire, HDI director Hazel Hill, the Mohawk Workers and Guswenta Holdings faced off over a proposed development deal that involves land at the corner of Erie Ave and Birkett Lane in Brantford.

Noting B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s support for fracking, demonstrators with the Vancouver Coast Salish Rising Tide group set up a mock fracking site protest outside of her home this past Sunday. The protest was quickly pulled down by authorities, but not before demonstrators made their point and images of the mock fracking site went viral.

Education and the threat of taxation topped the list of concerns of audience members at Monday’s debate between candidates for the position of Chief of Six Nations Elected Council.
With four strong candidates challenging incumbent elected Chief Bill Montour, one might have expected the sparks to fly in Monday’s debate at the Community Hall.
The debate mostly proved a respectful exchange of views, with all five candidates calling for unity and an end to factionalism and all equally angered by Ottawa’s dealings with Six Nations, particularly on the issue of education funding.
Montour faces challenges from sitting councillors Ava Hill and Ross Johnson.
Political newcomers William Monture and Nathan Wright complete the field. All four challengers spoke confidently about why they should be elected.

Times to his farm this weekend to discuss the corn shortage and what some have been calling the ‘Corn Crisis of 2013’.
“I’ve head people say our land isn’t fertile, that we can’t grow this stuff anymore.” says Hill. “There was a whole negativity that was brought to it. I thought, no that isn’t happening there is nothing wrong with our fields. Our fields can grow cow corn, they can grow wheat, beans, gardens are growing perfectly fine, there’s tobacco. I was on the board for the Indian Agricultural Program of Ontario, and there is more native farmers on this reserve than there ever has been.”
Craft shows were held simultaneously at the Woodland Cultural Centre, Six Nations Community Hall, J.C.Hill School, Two Row Architect and the Social Services Gym. Haudenosaune artisans from as far away as Akwesasne had their best works on display; from handmade traditional corn husk dolls, to wallets completely made out of duct tape.
TLAHUITOLTEPEC, MEXICO – Two Row Times circulation director Lucho Granados Ceja recently returned from a summit of Indigenous Communications held in Tlahuitoltepec, in the Sierra Mixe, southern Mexico. The summit brought together indigenous communicators from throughout the Western Hemisphere from Argentina to Canada.
