Fans of the NFL and Indigenous people posted to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and any other medium they had using the hashtag [tweetable alt=”Indigenous people are #NotYourMascot “]#NotYourMascot[/tweetable] to urge the Washington Redsk*ns to drop the racist term from the team name.
The National Congress of American Indians produced a commercial to raise awareness, but the organization did not have enough money to run it during the game. Instead, people across the spread it far and wide, making it go “viral” on the internet.
Campaigns organizers hit up some of the key news organizations and indigenous social media personalities, sharing images and using one another’s networks to make the issue trend across the United States and Canada for the entire weekend, spreading the message that indigenous people are #NotYourMascot.
